Impressionist artist who produced more than 3,000 paintings, etchings, and lithographs. Illustrated children's stories for Harper's Weekly, Scribner's Monthly, and The Century. He attended art school and went on to become an apprentice to an engraver. Early in his career he also worked as a graphic artist for newspapers.
