American Democratic politician who was elected Mayor of Austin, Texas in 2009. Prior to holding office as Mayor, he served on the Austin City Council. He studied mechanical engineering at the University of Texas at Austin and went on to serve in the U.S. Navy, including active duty in Vietnam.
