Poet, author, editor, and teacher who helped to establish the superb reputation of the Iowa Writers' Workshop. His best-known poetic works include Break the Heart's Anger, Corn, and The Word of Love. He was born in Cedar Rapids, Iowa and received a Rhodes Scholarship to attend Oxford University. Worn Earth, his debut poetry collection, won the Yale Series of Younger Poets Competition.
