A nineteenth-century English author, she is best known for her debut novel, The Adventures of Susan Hopley (1841). The work was followed by other popular novels, including Men and Women, The Story of Lily Dawson, and Linny Lockwood. She was home-schooled during her youth and read books frequently. Early in her career, she wrote two plays: Aristodemus (1838) and The Cruel Kindness (1853).
