An English poet and children's author, he also founded The Little Word Machine, a popular literary journal. His poetry collections include Because the Evenings, God Shave the Queen, and Never Stare at a Grizzly Bear. He attended Birmingham University, where he studied Industrial Metallurgy. He began publishing poetry during the late 1960s.
