Co-wrote the children's classic book Mr. Poppers Penguins with her husband Richard Atwater. The book was not accepted for publication in its first two attempts, however, following Richard's stroke, she revised the story and the rest is history. She studied French Literature at the University of Chicago and worked for The Chicago Literary Monthly as a co-editor.
