South African-born British poet and professor known for a World War II poem entitled "Soldiers Bathing." His other poetic works include The Doors of Stone, Drypoints of the Hasidim, and Walks in Rome. He studied at Balliol College, Oxford. He published his debut poetry collection in 1938.
