American "Poet of the Sierras" who is remembered for Pacific Poems, An Elk Hunt, and other western-themed works. He is also known for his 1886 novel, The Destruction of Gotham, which features a prostitute as a protagonist. He relocated from Indiana to California during the era of the California Gold Rush.
