A prolific author of poetry and fiction, she is perhaps best known for her more than 1,000-page-long novel, Miss MacIntosh, My Darling (1965). Her other works include Moderate Fable (1944) and Angel in the Forest (1945). She studied Elizabethan and Jacobean Literature at the University of Chicago. In 1937, she published her first poetry collection, Prismatic Ground.
