This three-time winner of the Scottish Women's Chess Championship and joint winner of the 1983 British Women's Chess Championship went on to earn the title of Woman FIDE (World Chess Federation) Master. In the early 1980s, she began competing for both New Zealand and her native Scotland in numerous Chess Olympiads. During this period, she also earned a Ph.D. in Astrophysics.
