British poet, editor, and literary critic whose best-known work is his Victorian poem "Invictus." His other works include a poetry collection entitled In Hospital and a work of literary criticism called Views and Reviews. He suffered from tuberculosis as a child. The disease eventually necessitated the amputation of the lower portion of his left leg.
