He received Tony and Drama Desk Award nominations for Best Featured Actor in a Musical for his performance in 1980's 42nd Street. His other credits include Applause and The Producers. He received a Master of Arts degree and an honorary doctorate from the University of Cincinnati's Conservatory of Music.
