Republican politician who became a Member of the US House Representative from Indiana from 1935 to 1969. He became nearly a household name in the 60s for his regular spirited televised debates with Democratic Senator Everett McKinley Dirksen. After serving in WW I, he was the prosecuting attorney in Rensselaer, Indiana, later gaining a vacated House seat.
