An American science fiction writer and critic, he is best known for his Anthony Villiers series and for his award-winning novel, Rite of Passage. He also published The World Beyond the Hill, a critical study of the genre of science fiction. He studied library science at the University of Chicago. He published his first three novels-- Rite of Passage, Star Well, and The Thurb Revolution-- in 1968.
