United States Representative from Minnesota and a member of the Democratic-Farmer-Labor Party. He was the first Islamic member of Congress and the first African-American congressman from Minnesota. After graduating from Wayne State University with a degree in economics, he earned a J.D. from the University of Minnesota's Law School.
