An American writer and journalist, he is best known as the co-author of the 1957 memoir, The Untouchables, which inspired a 1950s television series and a 1987 film. He also had a lengthy career as a sportswriter. While working as a reporter for United Press International, he was introduced to his Untouchables co-writer, Eliot Ness. After several rounds of scotch at the Waldorf-Astoria Hotel, the two agreed to co-write a book.
