Most famous for his acclaimed mid-twentieth century novel Under the Volcano, Lowry is also remembered for his early work Ultramarine, as well as for his posthumously-published novel October Ferry to Gabriola. His early experience in the shipping industry inspired much of the material in his first novel. Following his youthful nautical adventures, he earned an English degree from the University of Cambridge.
