American author and literary critic who also served as editor of The New York Times. He is most famous for two autobiographical works: Intoxicated by My Illness and Kafka Was the Rage. He was born into a Louisiana Creole family of mixed racial heritage, and he moved from New Orleans to New York City during The Great Depression.
