American soul jazz musician who recorded with Blue Note and with musicians like Grant Green, Lou Donaldson, and George Coleman. His nickname is Big John Patton. He taught himself to play the piano when he was growing up in Missouri and later moved to Washington where he began working with Lloyd Price and learned the Hammond organ.
