An American mystery writer with a career that spanned over sixty years, she is particularly known for novels such as While the Patient Slept, Danger in the Dark, and The White Cockatoo. Eight of her novels, including Hasty Wedding, were made into films. She briefly attended Nebraska Wesleyan University. She published her first novel, Patient in Room 18, in 1929.
