Affiliated with the Armenian Republican Party, he took office in 2008 as his country's third President. Previously, he had served as Armenian Prime Minister and as Minister of both Defense and National Security. In the early 1970s, he interrupted his philology studies at Yerevan State University to briefly join the Soviet Armed Forces.
