A Cameroonian author of the Twentieth Century, he is remembered for Le Pauvre Christ de Bomba and other controversial novels. His later works include Perpetue and Remember Ruben. He was expelled from missionary school for his outspoken views. He later studied at the Sorbonne in Paris.
