An American writer of novels set in Southern Maine, she is best known for works such as As the Earth Turns (1933) and Neighbor to the Sky (1937). The former work was nominated for the Pulitzer Prize. She graduated from Bates College in 1925 and soon thereafter began writing short stories and advice columns.
