Set Football Bowl Subdivision records for receiving yards and yards per reception at the tight end position with 1,352 and 104, respectively, while playing for the Texas Tech Red Raiders. He played his high school ball at San Antonio MacArthur high school and was being recruited as the #3 tight end in his class.
