A notable novelist, translator and playwright, she is best known for her Lord Peter Wimsey series and other works of detective fiction. She considered her translation of Dante's The Divine Comedy to be her finest work. She attended Somerville College, Oxford and included elements of her university experience in her 1935 novel, Gaudy Night. She published her first literary work-- a poetry collection--in 1916.
