An American author, she is known for works such as How to Breathe Underwater (a short story collection published in 2003) and The Invisible Bridge (a 2010 novel). She also published short stories in Ploughshares, the Paris Review, and other notable literary journals. She studied at Cornell University and the Iowa Writers ' Workshop and later attended Stanford University on a Stegner Fellowship.
