An American fiction writer and film scholar, he is best known for such novels as The Eiger Sanction, The Loo Sanction, and The Main. During the 1970s and 1980s, he published five novels that sold a combined total of more than five million copies. He taught at Dana College in Blair, Nebraska, and also served in the US Navy during the Korean War.
