After rising to fame for portraying Chesney Karib on the British television series Shameless, Akhtar began playing Zeedan Nazir on the popular soap opera Coronation Street. He made his screen acting debut in the 2006 family movie Mischief Night and went on to act in two episodes of Waterloo Road and in one episode of Doctors.
