Wrote a widely regarded symphony in G major in 1937 and more than 50 pieces of liturgy for the Church of England. He became a member of the Royal Fusiliers in 1914, but was sent home after experiencing shell-shock in 1916. He then signed up with the Royal Air Force and joined its military bands.
