Pulitzer Prize- and Grammy Award-winning composer and pianist who was named Composer of the Year by Musical America in 2007. He was awarded the Pulitzer Prize for Music for "12 New Etudes for Piano" in 1988. He enrolled at the University of Washington when he was 11 to study composition. He studied composition with George Frederick McKay and John Verrall.
