Appointed by President Truman as United States Ambassador to Denmark in 1949. She was the first woman to reach a senior diplomatic post of that level. Stirred by a 1937 trip to Europe, where she was the beginning of a totalitarian state in Germany, she became a strong voice in international affairs in the U.S.
