Twentieth-century British fiction writer, teacher, and publisher known for his eccentric persona. He is best remembered for his acclaimed novel The Harpole Report. He was a poor student and could not gain acceptance to a teachers' college. Nevertheless, he taught as an un-credentialed teacher at South Milford Primary School.
