An English author of children's fantasy fiction, she published the popular book, The Twelve and the Genii (1961) under the pen name of Helen Clare. The work earned her the Library Association's prestigious Carnegie Medal in 1962. After graduating from Oxford, she worked as a journalist and a writer for children's magazines. She published her first children's book, The Pekinese Princess, in 1948.
