A Pennsylvania-born historian and fiction writer, he is best known for his 1966 work, The Devil's Brigade, which was written in collaboration with Colonel George Walton and focused on the 1st Special Service Force, a combined American and Canadian military unit that fought in World War II. The work was adapted into a 1968 motion picture. A member of the Army Air Corps, he flew thirty-seven missions over Europe during World War II.
