English poet and editor whose first collection of poems, The Derelict Day, was published in 1947. Also a nonfiction author and journalist, he published numerous works on the subject of cricket, including Australia 63 and Ranji: Prince of Cricketers. He lived in Calcutta, India until age seven; afterwards, he studied at an English boarding school and excelled in art, French poetry, and cricket.
