The author of the classic, post-apocalyptic novel, Alas, Babylon (1959), he is also known for works such as Hold Back the Night (1951), Forbidden Area (1956), and Mr. Adam (1946). He wrote for the Jacksonville Journal and, later, the Miami Herald. He published his first work, Mr. Adam, in 1946.
