An American journalist, fiction writer, and poet, he is known for his popular novel, Kitty Foyle (1939), which was adapted into a film. He is also famous for Thunder on the Left (1925) and The Haunted Bookshop (1919). After graduating from Haverford College and New College, Oxford, he worked at Doubleday.
