Estonian writer who rose to prominence in the 1970s. His early works, including The Walls, fall into the category of socialist realism. His later works deal with themes of business and war and include such titles as The Case of Andres and Lapateus Enn Kalmu Kaks Mina. He worked in construction during his early adulthood. He later joined the Red Army and fought in the German-Soviet War.
