Opera composer and lyricist known for his compositions for such singers as Sylvia McNair, Ren 'e Fleming, and Denyce Graves. He collaborated with numerous other composers on such operatic pieces as To Hell and Back and Cold Mountain. After graduating from the renowned Eastman School of Music, he earned music fellowships to attend both the University of Cologne and the Hochschule F 'r Musik.
