Jamaican author who published four novels between 1980 and 2007, including The Rainmaker's Mistake and Louisiana. She received the Caribbean and Canadian Commonwealth Writers' Prize for her 1988 novel, Myal. She earned a B.A. and a Ph.D from the University College of the West Indies and subsequently worked as a teacher.
