Lyric poet, dramatist, and literary critic known for such poetic works as The Middle Passage and The Last Hero and Other Poems. His plays include Birth of a State and Nikal Seyn & Decoration Day; his critical works focus on Edwin Arlington Robinson and Chaucer. He attended Princeton University during the 1930s and went on to serve in the United States Navy during World War II.
