From the mid 1970s until the late 1990s, this Conservative Party politician served the Plymouth Sutton and Kensington & Chelsea constituencies in the British Parliament. He went on to serve as Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher's Minister of State for Trade and Minister for Defence Equipment, Support & Technology. After studying history at Christ Church, Oxford University and subsequently training as a barrister, he decided to pursue a career as a military historian.
