British musicologist, author, critic and teacher remembered for his expertise in the human singing voice. He wrote numerous books on the subject, including 1992's Voices, Singers and Critics, and contributed articles to music publications like The Musical Times. He was a housemaster at Merchant Taylors' School and published his first book, Marlowe: A Critical Study, in 1964.
