Best remembered as the United States Ambassador to Switzerland during the late 1960s and early 1970s, this member of the Republican Party served during the presidential administrations of Richard Nixon and Gerald Ford. Also an investment banker, he worked for the New York Stock Exchange and founded Shelby Cullom Davis & Company. He earned his bachelor's degree from Princeton University and his master's degree from Columbia University and went on to receive a PhD in political science from the Graduate Institute of International Studies in Geneva, Switzerland.
