A twentieth-century American author, he is best known for his 1958 novel, The Ugly American, which inspired the 1963 movie starring Marlon Brando. His other works include Ensign O'Toole and Me and a children's book entitled Timothy's Song. He served as an officer on the USS Tutuila, a gunboat stationed on the Yangtze River.
