Remembered for his bestselling novel The Magus, Fowles also penned numerous other acclaimed works of modernist and postmodernist fiction, including The Collector and The French Lieutenant's Woman. After serving in the Royal Marines, he studied German and French at New College, Oxford University. He published his first novel, The Collector, in 1963.
