American author, illustrator, and publisher whose short story, "Be Nice to Mr. Campbell," won the 1950 O. Henry Award. He also published, among other works, an autobiographical novel entitled The Big Cage. He began writing when he was just eight years old and published his first stories in the Cincinnati Times Star at the age of nine.
