An American author of mystery, science fiction, and historical fiction, he most famously wrote Tales of a Darkening World: The Davy series. His other works include Good Neighbors and Other Strangers (1972) and Wilderness of Spring (1958). He briefly attended the New England Conservatory of Music and later worked on a farm in Maine for three years.
