American singer and guitarist who was popular for her Gospel songs in the 1930s and 1940s. She was labeled "the original soul sister" due to being the first Gospel music crossover artist. She started singing and playing guitar at age 4 and joined her mother on stage in a traveling evangelical troupe by the time she was 6 years old.
