South Carolina Poet Laureate and children's poet known for Gillygaloos and Gollywhoppers, Windwagon Smith, and other verse works. He also translated the Iliad and Odyssey of Homer. He grew up in Newport News, Virginia and graduated from both the College of William and Mary and Harvard University.
